Fichardt sets clubhouse target

After a 4am start to finish his first round, South Africa’s Darren Fichardt was a very happy man as he signed for a second-round 66 and the clubhouse lead of the Joburg Open on Friday.

A new putter gave Fichardt the touch he’s been looking for on the greens and he finished two rounds at 11 under par. It may change as both Paul Waring and Dean Burmester complete their second rounds early on Saturday morning.

Waring had reached 12 under through 12 holes and Burmester 11 under through 16 when darkness brought an end to play on Friday.

But Fichardt is quite happy to be where he is.

“Definitely. It was tricky, but I just tried to keep it on fairways and greens and that worked out. I putted solid for a change. But it was a very long day out there,” Fichardt said.

Jacques Kruyswijk was also delighted to make it into the clubhouse on 10 under.

“I’m pretty pleased. I didn’t expect to play this well this week. I was very sick and couldn’t play any practice rounds. But I know the courses here well and have won here before as an amateur. I enjoy it here,” he said.

Defending champion Haydn Porteous is equally well-placed on nine under.
