Joburg Open golf clinic reaches new heights

By Michael Vlismas

The annual golf clinic of the Joburg Open held even greater significance this week as it was hosted against the backdrop of the major upgrades taking place at Soweto Country Club.

Yesterday, over 100 young golfers from the Soweto community were given advice and golf lessons by professionals from the three major tours of the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and Asian Tour ahead of this week’s tri-sanctioned tournament at Randpark Golf Club.

The clinic was an apt reflection of the new era the Joburg Open has entered as a tri-sanctioned tournament and a major catalyst in the development of golf within the Soweto community.

“This is absolutely amazing,” said Bongi Mokaba, the promoter of the Joburg Open. “This is a facility that will benefit the community at large. We are opening up opportunities to the next generation here. And these are not just opportunities to play professional golf one day, but also to perhaps join the golf media, or become a greenkeeper. That’s the opportunities these children will have.”

Sunshine Tour professional James Kamte was amongst the professionals supporting the clinic, which he believes are vital for the growth of the game.

“It’s important for me to give back through these clinics because this is how I started. I know what clinics like this can do for a young golfer who has the talent, and that’s why I always take them very seriously.”

European professional Petr Dedek made his first trip into Soweto and was astounded by the history of this iconic township and the work being done to grow the game of golf here.

“As soon as we arrived here at Soweto Country Club and all of the kids were so friendly, it was amazing to experience. If we want to develop golf for the future, we have to take care of our kids in the sport. There is some incredible talent here in Soweto, especially amongst the really young kids who are just so natural with their swings.”
